The Xps battery is a 9 cell 85 WHr lithium-ion Battery and the m17x battery is a 12 Cell lithium-ion battery. From what I have heard the two rigs are very similar internally and I was wondering; does anyone knows if the 17x battery will fit the 1730? Three extra cells may come in handy!

FFS don't try this. You could blow your motherboard.

Even if the output voltage wasn't that much higher than the 9cell

You know what try and see what happens. You seem so intent on destroying you laptop, I don't see why you shouldn't.

Wow. Im not intent on destroying anything sir it was only a question and I dont appricate the rudeness. seeing how its not welcome I will stifle my curiousity when posting. I recognize the fact that you know more about this stuff than me but a simple "don't do it" isn't a good answer.

Frankly I think it is, and I don't know a huge amount about swapping batteries - it would be something I would class as common sense. Contact Dell and Alienware, their opinion might be that's its a great idea and that the voltage difference is negligible.

That wasn't rude. I was trying to re-enforce a simple message that if you do this you will MOST LIKELY (if indeed the thing even fits) damage some very expensive and nice laptop equipment. Some people seem to get their kicks out of this though - so each to their own.

    Actually 72hundred is right,
Even though that battery is a 12 cell, and the one you have is a 9 cell, the batteries are made by two differnet manufacturers and have a different voltage pinout. The batteries for one wouldnt even be compatible, and if they were, the voltage lines would not match up, and would cause your pretty new gem of a laptop to have all sorts of electrical failures.

If you really want a 12 cell battery, buy a second battery for your rig, disassemble both of them, and then cut three cells out of the new battery, and solder them in series to your original 9 cell pack, and that will work. However you would need to make a new battery casing, cause 12 cells are not going to fit in a 9 cell encasement.

Sorry to break the bad news,

But on a good note, try undervolting your cpu in order to maximize battery life and cpu performance.

That's what I was looking for. I believed 72hundred when he told me it would fry but I wanted to know why. Thanks k-tron. Thread closed.
