Alright... so I own a Dell Inspiron 1420, which I am quite happy with... no problems for a year. Then, just recently the fan has been noisier than th eusual complaints you see posted on here.... I tried "cleaning" it with compressed air, tried vacuuming it with my Dyson etc... no real success.
I am monitoring now with I8kfangui. NO significant noticeable problems; the fan seems to kick into high when I use certain CPU intensive programs (like an advanced chess program, etc.).
SO....! Apart from sending it back to Dell, who may or may not find the same problem... can I replace my fan with the exact same fan model? I've seen some fans on eBay and Google Shopping links. Can anyone advise the fan model? I am fairly proficient with laptops (hardware) and I have taken them apart in the past to install memory, replace keyboards, etc.
One more question: could my VIDEO card be part of the problem?
Advice, please. Thanks.![]()

Do you have the nVidia GPU or the intel GPU?
What BIOS version are you on? -
There’s a tar like substance that can’t be removed by air or vac, I’d clean it manually before doing anything else.

If you have i8kfangui installed, you can use that program to adjust the speed of your fans. You can set them to run slower, or faster.
core temp is another good program to measure cpu temperature

To answer some questions: I'm using nVidia (not Intel) for display adapter.
I have i8kfangui installed, but that only controls fan speed, not the root issue.
I'm not sure about the "tar-like" substance. I'll take off the keyboard to look for it.
Meanwhile, back to my original question, is it possible for me to replace the fan if need be? Has anyone done this?
Thanks. -
i dont know how tar can get in your laptop, i think the more appropriate word is "caked on dust"
You can clean the dust out of both the fan and the heatsink fins with q-tips and sime rubbing alcohol.
Be sure that the system is compeletly powered down before cleaning. That means the battery needs to be removed to.
You can always replace the fan. You just need to buy a compatible one. Google the part number of the fan. The fan's info should be imprinted on the fan enclosure
