I upgraded the CPU on my DV9308nr yesterday and all was fine until i plugged the AC Adapter in (but didnt turn it on). It started smoking from under the keyboard so i pulled the power out. I took off the keyboard and tried it again. Sure enough, the ZIF cable that connects the power board to the Main board literally caught on fire near the adapter to the main board.
Now it doesnt turn on at all and the ZIF cable is damaged. See the pics below.
anyone know what causes this and if I can replace the ZIF cable [preferably for cheap?]

If that is the case that it caught on fire, I am almost positive there is a lot more damage than just the cable...time to get a new notebook.
You basically shorted the entire laptop out. -
A new ZIF cable will cost you $25-50. Your powerboard is probably dead too.
To come to think of it, alot of things could be dead. I suggest selling whats left on ebay and get a new notebook. -
I agree. It takes quite a bit of current to fry a zif cable like that. Something got shorted during your processor swap.

One of the risks of upgrading a CPU kids. Because of timing that does appear to be the cause somehow. Could be coincidence but I doubt. And as said damage likely much more extensive than apparent. As far as repairing goes? Don't know the extent of the damage? You don't even know the cause only the symptom. Not a good recipe for successful repair?
Sorry about your misfortune but more money and time on something you can't fix would be worse I think. -
yeah good point. i picked up a dv5t today at best buy and am absolutely in love with it. i figure i'll just sell the RAM and display on ebay and return the processor to newbiiz.
thanks guys! -
What processor is it?
-
You hooked it up upside down on one of the ends. That's why it shorted.
You can get new ZIF at 2fix.net. Those are the best. -
that sucks... i dont think i will be upgrading my processor as i planned to in a year once i got the cash

So why are still talking about a thread that has been undisturbed for exactly one year?
