_strange issue with Hitachi drive

I am using a notebook with an Hitachi 7k100 100gb 7200rpm drive. It skips when I move the computer slightly much like the way an old portable CD player does. Other than that, I cannot detect anything strange from everyday use and HD Tune says it has no errors. What could be causing this. Did I turn off anti skip some how?

 

What does "skip" entail?
Does music skip at this time?
does the system seem frozen?

You may want to check the S.M.A.R.T. readings in the health tab of hdtune. If everything is okay, than the problem may just be a software issue, which coincidentally occurs when you move the system.
Their could also be a problem with the drive.
If the drive is infact the problem, I suggest backing up your data and getting the harddrive out of your system.
Hitachi carries a 3 year warranty on their drives, so if yours is still less than 3 yrs old, you can send it in for replacement/repair.

To my knowledge, their is no "anti-skip" features you can select

It skips noticeably when I move the computer during some kind of video playback whether it be in windvd or wmp. I had a x61 before and it didn't have this problem. I also just checked the smart tab on hdtune but there is no information available for some reason. What do you think?

 

What notebook do you have now? It might be the hdd protection motion sensor detecting movement and parking the hdd drive head.

 

What is the cpu usage like when you move your system. If you unplug the system to run on battery, and still play music, the system runs slower, and this maybe too slow to play music. Too many background processes can consume all of the power of the system, making it hard to even play music.
If you open task manager, report the average cpu usage.
If its more than 50% there are too many processes killing your system performance resulting in slow downs.

I am using a 1.6 core duo x60s with 2g ram. When I watch a movie for example, the average cpu usage is only about 9%. I only need to lift the front of the computer a bit to cause it to pause/stutter for a second and the cpu usage doesn't change while that happens. Is the motion sensor detection thing only for the 7k100 series? I think I had the 5k80 on my previous x61 and this type of thing never happened.

actually the 7K100 series was not offered with a free fall sensor, so their must e something physically wrong with the harddrive.

I dont see anything mentioning a free fall sensor anywhere.

I dont think the X60 has one on the motherboard either, so I think its just a harddrive issue.

Did this ever happen in the past?
If it didnt, than the problem is related to harddrive wear and tear

I think the HDD APS (Active Protection System) kicks in when you move the laptop, you can disable it or change the sensivity threshold.
I remember my T42p with an aftermarket upgrade to a 7K100 did the same 'skipping' thing.
