I have my new laptop an acer aspire 5720 spec's in my sig. I am having a issue with programs slowing down/having lag for instance scrolling threw itunes It is very jumpy and does not scroll smoothly same as typing sometimes I will be typing and what I typed will pop up after I have already typed the word. I am seeing a memery usage on average of 1.20 gb's. I usually have firefox with multable tabs open, itunes, limewire, msn, word or excell doc's ect lot's of stuff running at the same time.

I would like to upgrade to 4gb of ram from what I read windows will only reconize 3.2-3.5gb's. I could upgrade to the 64bit vista but is the extra difference worth it? and I hear there is problems with doing that. My other issue is watching video's They are choppy at times and slow down the computer? My only complaint with my new laptop is performance running multiple applications. I hope that having a extra 1.? gb will make a noticable difference I am just not sure if it will or what brand or type of ram to buy (5400 vs 6400) right now it has two 1gb sticks of pc2-5400 ram. is it worth it to spend the extra 50$ on the faster ram? thanks for the help I could not find the answer I am looking for and am confused about these specs

Santa Rosa platforms can only address up to 667Mhz memory. 800Mhz would not be worth it (PC2-6400).

As for the memory issue, I say get 4GB (2x2GB) because you'll have dual-channel enabled plus the ability to utilize all of your memory once you upgrade to a 64-bit OS. Basically, you can get a 4GB set for $80 and then sell your current 2GB set for $40 or so. So the upgrade would have cost you $40. :)

Going to Windows 64 is not the answer at this point. If you do need more RAM a single 2GB stick would be your best answer. What you describe sounds more like stuff running in the background (bloatware) also when not on line is it the same? The answer is not more RAM, many things you mention others w/2GB do not have. You need to look at your problem again.

I do agree that I most likely do not need to do the upgrade and just need to clean up the computer some I simply can't find out much about tweaking vista for the maximum performance and their is alot of applications and services run that I have no idea what they do. I got my old laptop running well after reading the sticky on tweaking xp. 1.6ghz turion 512mb 80gig hd and I was happy with it this computer is certainly faster although I feel it should be quite a bit faster then what it is running right now. Is there a guide to tweaking vista hiding around here somewhere? I'll try that first I don't believe their to be much crap running although I am not sure because I have not yet gone threw to see what it all is.

Ok I got my laptop running quite a bit better now after doing most of the tweaks I could find although it is still a slight bit slow doing somethings I am planning to buy a 4gb kit still as I feel it will make a big difference in performance. As well because of the fact that I have reduced my page file to zero I am seeing memory usages in the area of 1.35-1.7 gb's when doing multiple things at once and I have got the pop up stating you're system is running low on physical memory to please close some programs once when seeing how high I could get the memory usage. I have however seen a noticable increase in performance since removing the page file so I feel the benifit's are worth not being able to run a bunch of stuff at once for the time being.

I am planning to buy this kit ocz pc6400 ddr2 800mhz 2gbx2 for 84$ after rebate of http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3582354&CatId=3633 Seem like a good deal cheaper then the pc5400 to. I then plan to get the new hitachi 7k320 hd for the performace and increased storage space as well as upgrading to the 64bit vista What type of improvement so you guy's figure I'll see with these upgrades and any comments on the ram or hd choices? Thanks alot

ram is fine if u r getting it cheaper than the PC2-5400....although it will run at 667MHz....
upgrading to 64bit vista wont do u that much gud but will increase performance although I never noticed anything extravagant after the upgrade to 64bit....but i went ahead with it 'cause it was free.. :p
no idea about the hdd....but if it is performance u seek....irrespective of the sound and heat....go for the 7K200....it decimates all.... :p

you might even consider a 320gig 5400rpm drive... due to the higher density of the data on the platters it almost negates the difference in spindle speed..

the main difference is in seek times... and there the 7200 wins hands down

but the 200g 7200rpm has almost equal data transfer speeds as a 320g 5400rpm drive

so do a bit of research there before you buy
