I am thinking about buying a new laptop.
Two canidates acer 8204 or asus a8jm

With the new pci express and core duo is it possible to upgrade later?

I would likely uprade to an 64 bit core duo in one or one and a half year. I heard some rumors that the current core duo should be pin compatible with its 64bit successor.
So can I substitude the cpu in the 8204? My current travelmate 800 has a cpu which is soldered on the mainboard. Is this different in current notebooks?
I could imagine it is easier to substitute the cpu of the A8jm as it is sold in different configurations and even with an x1600 if you preferre.

That leads to my secound question. Are GPUs now interchangeable in notebooks? Are with the pci express standard even ati and nvidia interchangeable?
I read about a dell notebook upraded from a ati1400 to nvidia7900... which made me belive in this possibility.

I could imagine some temperature issues but i wouldn't want to substitue a mid range GPU like the x1600 with an mobile power house like the 7900gtx.
I am more interessted to get after a year or so the next mid range GPU with hope full equal or even less power consumption.

Thanks for any enlightment on how much is real interchangeable in todays notebooks.

    Regards

cpu is upgradable, gpu is not
very few gpu's are, and those that are, are heavily advertised, so you'd know if you could.
usually it's th 17" ones with nVidia 7800/7900 that can.
get the asus, and upgrade the cpu later
