no blue screen will prevent you from formatting.
take the harddrive out of your laptop, and look at the end of the harddrive.
If there are 39 pins sticking out of the end, than your harddrive is an ATA harddrive.
If your harddrive has a small black piece sticking out of it, with a few connectors, than you have a sata based laptop harddrive.
Chances are that its an ata drive, if the system is over 2 yrs old.

You do not need to get a new harddrive.
If you get a ata to usb adaptor, you will be able to format the harddrive with another computer.
You should be able to put the xp or vista cd into your computer, and it will format the harddrive.
If you cannot get this to work, than you need one of these:

I have this adaptor, and it will allow one to connect any sata or ata desktop or notebook based harddrive to a usb connector.
After you connect the drive, you be able to use the windows formatter to format the harddrive.

You should be able to format the drive with your operating system.
If no drive is recognized in the Bios, than the harddrive is dead and needs to be replaced.
