I assume the adaptor limits you to USB speeds and doesn't take advantage of Firewire better speed?

Your speeds will be limited to the speed of the USB.
All you need to do for it to work is just plug it in to your USB port and you're all set.

I am actually using the firewire port to convert the minidv to dvd conversion. I also heard if I use usb to convert, the quality of the video is bad. If I use this adaptor will the quality be similar to the true firewire port or how will the quality be.

    Could someone assist plz asap?

guess what? you don't have a choice. if you only have USB slots on your computer, how are you going to use any expansion device except for usb?
