A number of threads mention how much cheaper aftermarket memory is? I am thinking of buying an hp dv6000z. The memory upgrades cost $75 to go from 512M to 1G and $250 to go from 512M to 2G. I have looked at the newegg site and it appears that a 1G stick will cost me $100-110. Am I looking at the right data? It doesn't appear that much cheaper to me. From what I can tell, the hp dv6000z uses DDR2 SDRAM memory.

yes and no, a month ago it would have been loads cheaper, with the coming of vista, memory manufacturers have slowed production in hopes of increasing the prices on the memory modules, (which sucks) and are looking to benefit off the market. basically yes after market is cheaper, because you get to sell off your old sticks and get to buy new sticks at a cheaper price. no because at this point in time the prices are very high and they won't come down for a while...

in that case i would suggest you spend 75 to upgrade to 1gig as long as thats one stick one gig, not two stick 1 gig. and then spend teh 80-100 to buy the second stick elsewhere. oif it is two 512 sticks to hit one gig, then things get tougher, but youd still save over 50 by buying it from newegg.
if you look around u can find better prices i see newegg has pc5400 ocz listed for 103.00 which seems a good price, also there is some pc5300 supertalent, which although is a lesser known brand i have heard nothing but good things about (msi fans can back me up here)
edit: sorry for the price confusion, i didnt realize ram had risen 20 dollars a gig since i was looking at prices to build an s96j with last spring -
you also have to remember that upgrading aftermarket means you will have the aftermarket ram PLUS the ram that came with your computer. you can try to sell the factory ram to make some money back or strategize your aftermarket upgrade so as to take maximum advantage of both.
