Since you could probably get 4gb of ram for half the price alienware is offering, what would be the best place to get it? I am thinking about Corsair, but am open to things like crucial and patriot.
Which ram is the most often compatible and offers the best performance?

I am using the m9750 as a purchase example, as they do not offer m15x modules yet. What does latency mean, as apparently different latency is offered. What is the best kind of latency? I will not have 64bit, but I do not really need 4gb of ram, 3-3.5 is good.

wow..... 4gb corsair for nder $100 while alienware costs like $500 if you upgraded the m15x $1499....

It's $300 to do so from 2gb ram, so it might be $500 from 1 gigabyte.

u can just go newegg.com and purchase your laptop ram from there. 4 gigs of ram is just about 100 bucks. The lower the Cas Latency the faster the ram. Just make sure you are getting the correct number of pins and the correct mhz for the ram. Also make sure its DDR2 ram. Then once the ram gets here you open up your laptop take out the ram and replace it with the ones you bought

    The Ram should be 200-pin DDR2 SO-DIMM 667Mhz DDR2 RAM (PC2 5300 or 5400) < no diffrence between these 2.

i've heard about the m15x having easy access to the hardware, my current laptop has ram behind a lot of things, so would it be as easy to take a cover off, remove, and put in the new ram on an m15x? Does using corsair void the warranty? Do you need to install software or does it boot as normal?

    Travis, I don't have a M15x but I have a few suggestions.

    1. Installing new memory is not going to Void your warrantee. If you have an issue with your system, just put the original memory back in before you send it back.

    2. VERY IMPORTANT before you install the memory ALWAYS unplug the power and REMOVE the battery. Alot of people don't do this but before you change hardware alway remove power from the system.

I like to get all my ram straight from crucial because theyre a direct from manufacturer site. Meaning lower prices. Plus they have a helpful ram selector that means you will get compatible ram or they refund you.

Brand does not matter. As far as speed goes asking which is faster is like asking between a Ford and a Chevy that both get 13 sec 1/4 miles which is faster, latency will have an impact I have seen some advertised as 4 but have doubts it runs at that at 667Mhz, but if it does could be about up to 20% faster. And as said does not void warranty, you do not even need to put the original RAM back in for service. You can usually diagnose a RAM problem on your own and as long as RAM is not the issue warranty is still good.
