I am torn between these 2 notebooks, both are within my budget. All other components are pretty much similar between the 2, graphics, hard drives, screens, batteries and features etc.)

If one was to choose based ONLY on performance specs i've listed below; which one would be a better more sound buy. Someone mentioned to me that the AMDs tend to suckup more bettery than Intel, is it true?

    Toshiba Satelite (A200-AH7) Intel core Duo T2450 2.0GHz System Bus= 533MHz with 2 GB OF DDR2 RAM New for = $900 Canadian$

    or

HP Pavilion Special Edition DV6458se AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core 2.0GHz System Bus = states up to 1600MHz with 2 GB OF DDR2 RAM New for = $1,145 Canadian$

This is what i intend to do mostly: No gaming, all usual office applications but want to be able to work with video ala Movie Maker/Roxio Movie producer style, nothing heavy but burning movies/dvd and edit footage is important

Can anyone take a minute and post some pros and cons between the 2 and steer me in the right directions.

(my apologies if this has been asked before, I’ve checked but i'm a newcomer to the site)

HP does make really good multimedia notebooks and it seems to be the more powerful notebook in this case....but on the other hand if you won't be doing heavy stuff then you could go with the cheaper notebook. no use in spending more money for what you don't need. you could also look at the Hp dv6500t or the hp6000t or z series.

The HP looks to be just about the same or slightly ahead in performance, yet its over $200 cheaper. Definitely go with that.

I don't know about AMDs sucking up more battery.. but as much of an AMD fangirl as I am, I must admit that Intel is ahead of the game these days.

Other than that, HP's service and support is some of the worst out there. I'd probably get the Toshiba based on the fact that it's Intel and it's not HP, ha. I wouldn't be surprised if the HP were a better machine. Are these really your only two choices?

This is what I would say.

    Toshiba
    Pro:Cheaper, Fast
    Con:White Keyboard, gets dirty easy

    Hp:
    Pro:A bit Faster
    Con:Better Graphics

First thanks to all for helping out this newbie...much appreciated!

    Allan.....>
Interesting you mentioned "Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5200 1.6Ghz 2Mb 533Mhz UV to 0.950V"

I'm starting to consider the "Toshiba Satellite A200-TH7 Intel Core2 Duo
    T5450 1.67GHz System Bus 667MHz (ATI Mobility Radeon HD2600)

It's a little bit pricier ($1,600 cnd) than the other two, but i understand that it has dedicated graphics and will help me with video editing. I'm a little concerned/confused about the 1.67GHz speed drop. Both of my previous choices you'll notice that they were 2GHz speeds. Is this drop in speed going to be compensated by the fact that now this a core2duo as opposed to just a core duo?

On the flip side around that price, there's also the "HP Pavilion (DV6568SE) Intel Centino Core 2 Duo T5450 1.66GHz System Bus 667MHz FSB (NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS) for $1500 cnd. I understand that this one doesn't have dedicated graphics.

Also a little confusing to me is “Intel core 2 duo” vs “Intel Centrino Core 2 duo”? the specs are the same but one shows the word Centrino and the other doesn't.

    Paranoia.....>
As far as choices go, i really don't have a lot of experience so i rely on magazines and "sales people..i know, scary" but that's what i'm being advised towards...any other suggestions. My budget is $1600 max (not including tax)

they can't both be faster. hah.

based on the processor only (they both have 2 GB of ram)

    lets start here:

the toshiba will be somewhat faster and have somewhat better battery life.

it is almost certainly faster overall with comparable components otherwise.

battery life depends on a TON of factors other than the processor. its up in the air as to which computer is better on the battery, but the toshiba has better battery life scores in the processor department, if that makes sense.

the other thing to consider is that the amd processor has 64 bit extensions whereas the intel one is 32 bit only.

You said "Interesting you mentioned "Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T5200 1.6Ghz 2Mb 533Mhz UV to 0.950V"
I do it so, my max temperature is lower 20c. Fan is 50% more off, and cools 50% faster

I believe that the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS is a dedicated card.

You also said “Intel core 2 duo” vs “Intel Centrino Core 2 duo”, All notebook C2D proccessors should have the "Centrino" before it because it will identifie it as mobile processors, the the desktops are the regular "Core 2 Duo. But you can easily identify the mobile processors with a T before the numbers.
