What I'm talking about is that I have one ext docking station that I use with a internl HDD. The other ext HDD is a stand alone self contained slower speed 5400 rpm it's one of those Western Dig passport portable. Both connect to the PC with USB 2.0 by the way.

I want to xfer the 600gigs of data thats on my 5400rpm portable which I want to move it to my 1TB 7200rpm ext dock.

So what I was thinking was hooking both ext HDD's to the PC and the PC would be intermediary between both. I would xfer the 600gigs of data right to the other ext HDD.

My question is it safe to do this ? Is it better ideal to xfer the 600gigs to the PC then the PC to the other HDD ext ?

I might be over thinking this. I don't know if it's a good ideal or not because of the diff type of ext HDD's & diff speeds.

While I'm on the subject what about a USB thumb drive to a ext HDD and then what about a ext HDD 2.0 device xfering or recieving from a USB3.0 ext HHD ? Do any of the above could cause a problem ? I just want to know.

I do this all the time. The only "issue" is that it's slow as crap thanks to the USB 2.0 bottleneck.

Your bottleneck is USB 2.0 not the 5400 rpm drive.

No difference between 3.0 and 2.0 unless your laptop has a 3.0 port, it is backwards compatible.

That's the standard procedure for copying data between two drives. It will work fine.
