I have just found out the brilliant pictures the 8740w with the dreamcolor display could produce. Have a look here. It's simply unbelievable!

I started looking up on ebay, and it is possible to buy just the screen as a spare part on ebay! Searching for "8740w wuxga" it produced two results, one is this:
17" LCD Screen HP EliteBook 8740w Dreamcolor2 WUXGA LED - eBay (item 320554707950 end time Jul-28-10 00:22:49 PDT)

Do you think it's the original IPS screen? If so, it's an amazing value for a 10-bit IPS screen in a laptop. My question is, as I see there are many screen moddings and custom cable buildings threads in this forum: is there any good value laptop which could accept this screen (I mean, like Asus gaming series)? I don't know how hard could be to build a custom cable for this, but even if we could just use it in 8-bit mode, it would be an awesome mod. The best screen mod ever!

I doubt an asus would accept it. Another 17 inch HP most probbaly one in their business line would accept it althoug thats not even guaranteed. In fact its 1920x1200 which is a 16:10 screen and all of HP's consumer line use 16:9 screens which are a different ratio so i think you will only get it ot fit in another 17 inch HP business notebook.

very doubtful, I bet we only see these panels in the higher end workstation laptops for quite some time. My wife has one and the screen on that thing makes alot of external monitors look bad letalone consumer/prosumer laptops.

she finds going from her 8740w to my sony Z or her MBP 17" like going back to a 20 year old tv with rabbit ears and static

Isn't that some kind of LG panel? searching for the exact type number will probably produce more results.

I would think it would work in other 17.1" 16:10 laptops too.
