"Built with SanDisk’s sixth-generation TLC flash..."

SED, 1TB M.2 2280, sounded great but lost me at TLC. Anyone know how reliable SanDisk's TLC is compared to Samsung's? I know Samsung had issues with their EVO TLC drives so I'm wondering if SanDisk TLC flash is superior or the same?

TLC is 'coming into it's own' in 2016 because of cost.

Send a clear message to manufacturers (yeah; even to SanDisk) that TLC is garbage to us.

Let it languish on the shelves until they catch on we have no need of this junk.

If/when 3D/TLC at 40nm or greater die size is available (besides from Samsung... for me...), I might reconsider.

But planar TLC was dead back in 2012 when Samsung gave the world the first TLC drive; the 840 (non evo).

    See:
    http://www.overclock.net/t/1507897/...-written-data-in-the-drive/3110#post_24765173

And now, 4 years later, the TLC issues are still not fixed...

Throw away money if you want. Just don't think (planar) TLC is ever going to become a real option anytime soon (i.e. 1TB+ of TLC SSD for less than $20.00 and even then, I don't know if it's worth it even with a 5 year warranty...).

For this size they are both tlc
Any thought on which is better tic?

For an mlc 228p you can get a crucial m600
At 512gb. There is even a transcend 512gb on upcoming that is supposedly double mlc. A new category that can outlast slc

I have 3 different types of ssds right now. 2 of the same one in raid its a 256gb lite on mlc
1 tb bx100 mlc its also 16 nm nand. runs very cool

and i have a samsung 850 tlc and all are healthy but the one that has any problems is absolutely the samsung during test speed will drop. it makes no sense at all but the samsung is my boot disk.

anyhow im inclined to agree just on my personal experience
all are very fast but only the samsung hiccups. when i turn it to just storage it will be fine.

If the drive is using 6th generation tlc
    Ncache 2.0

Doesn't that mean it's using samsung 3d tlc?
That's what that is. Ncache 2 0 is the slc buffer.

When these two reach the market we might find out they are actually the same thing

Fixed for the 840 Evo, but they didn't release a fixed firmware version for the 840 - I don't know why, but if I was an 840 (non Evo) owner I would be very mad with them!

Im not a fan of TLC either, but it seems to be the only option for a m.2 @ 1TB currently. I just ordered the x400 m.2 1TB today for my 2015 Razer Blade. after reading the pdfs it feels like there is a lot of data correction going on internally as there is a core dedicated to it, but the rated 320TBW lifespan and 5 year warranty makes me feel less concerned. crossing my fingers as there are no actual real world reviews on it yet.

Where did you buy your drive from?

I purchased one from Beach Audio through Amazon and they sent me a 2.5 inch sata drive.

That wasn't mine, but I am going to write a review about Beach Audio when I finally get my refund and I'll also post on Amazon.

Right now I wouldn't trust any seller on Amazon or Newegg to actually have the correct drive in stock, I wrote another vendor asking about the drive and never heard back from them, their name isn't on the list of vendors selling this drive on Amazon right now.

Well before I could even get one

    My laptop was stolen

So I no longer have a laptop with 3 m2 slots

I ordered a xps 15 which has a single nvme
    So I did order an sata m2 for it a mx200 500gb

It has a 2.5 inch hed which I will replace with a. 1 tb ssd.

So anyhow the x400 1tb is way less exciting to me now. I'm now looking for cheap 1 tb 2.5 inch ssd for storage

Then down the road a single 1 tb nvme drive
And I know of only one even being thought about its called a Samsung 950 pro

Hey not all of the US is like that! In some areas people don't need to lock their houses and can leave keys in cars overnight. Never had anything stolen here :)

*I wrote a review on amazon about getting the 2.5" drives, was very disappointed they sent me those even after I asked them about it before they shipped them to me. They did give me a full refund on all three drives but seems wasteful that they keep shipping them to us.

I'm torn between buying this drive or waiting for Samsung's but I would only go with Samsung only if they match the price of 250 of this drive, should I wait?

Everybody says TLC is to be avoided at all cost so I'm curious, disregarding the price, all usage conditions being equal, what would more reliable (last longer), a regular 5400rpm 1TB 2.5 Sata Drive or a 1TB M.2 (TLC)?

I think SSD's are generally more reliable than HDD's - no moving parts, and especially a large SSD will have no problems with write endurance (you're talking 1TB). If I had to choose between the two, then I would without doubt get the SSD. If you're gonna use the drive as a backup drive though that's gonna be unplugged & unpowered for most of it's life, then that's when you'd buy the HDD, SSD's can be quite unreliable when unpowered & unused (especially TLC based SSD's).

let me apologize for the confusing advice given here

however the sandisk x400 and the samsung 850 evo actually use the same technology
and it is called 3d vnand TLC.

And it comes to market with a lifespan that greatly exceeds the previous widespread technology which is called planar mlc according to life span estimates and all actual tests....

theres a good reason to believe that the only 1 tb m2 ssd that ever will be for sale will be 3d vnand

and its greatly different than the planar tlc which was.... in the 840 evo. sandisk ultra 2. basically there are almost no planar tlc drives that ever were for sale and its a strange waste of time that people here even talk about it or categorize it...

but the nand itself may have a shorter lifespan in that case. We dont have very many owners with those ssds here and never have. Ive seen the sandisk ultra 2 for sale cheap and a few people have one here.

when the samsung 850 version of this 1 tb m2 sata drive comes out I think it will be more expensive. And faster.

so if someone tells you to avoid TLC at all cost theyre really lost.

Theres a progression of technology and whats called 3d vnand tlc is more advanced than planar mlc, which is obsolete.

and to answer your question thats weird because a m2 ssd may have a lot more heat shortening its life.

But the 3d tlc ssd will outlast almost all planar mlc drives. And a technology right now only for sale from samsung called 3d vnand mlc is the longest lasting ssd not called slc, in fact because it also includes the largest SLC cache.

but so basing your lifespan only on NAND ( where as all tests show that the controller and then the firmware fail first and nand failing was not even recorded in a recent ssd test from any of the brands)

the answer to your question is .... 3d vnand in the sandisk x400

I've got a 1TB Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD (ie TLC) which has been in use for over 2 years and has almost reached 10,000 hours. The TBW is not yet 20TB so there's plenty of potential life remaining. I would be worried about an HDD with that many hours having an increased risk of failure.

SSDs, like HDDs, can die suddenly and without warning so regular backups should be undertaken. However, SSDs are inherently more robust and unlikely so suffer mechanical damage.

Thanks for the answers that makes everything clearer, so SSD will always be better than HDD, unless the drive is going to be off and disconnected for long periods of time (which is not the case for me as would be an internal laptop drive)

I already have 3 external HDDs and make backups weekly (which must be done regardless of the current tech)

I'm about to bite the bullet and buy this drive, specially if the price is going to be higher on the samsung, speed is not that much of a concern since I also plan to buy a Samsung 950 PRO 256GB just for the OS in a few months and even now I already have the OS on a separated 128GB SSD

Depends on how you treat that HDD...

That is just over 1 year of continual service (in hours, 24/7). I start to be concerned for my HDD's after 5 years or so...

If they haven't self destructed in the first day, week, month or year; they tend to be pretty reliable. Plus they don't just give up the ghost without warning either... (like all SSD's I've seen die do).

have had 2 laptop hdds have problems in my last 2 laptops

first died almost instantly never to come back without warning.

    that lpatop got stolen,
new laptop has a 7mm hdd standard.
Its now in a external. less than 10 hours total, already at warning.

last 2 laptop hdds. both hitachi.

and for what it matters.... almost all the laptop hdds ive had lasted longer but they all died.

I can remember some that died slowly and you could freeze them.

but they are all machines they will die. many if not all ssds for sale should last your natural life.

My storage use is on the level of power user, but not on the business level

i dont know if you can see my signature but i got these drives seperate from my laptop with the thoughts of getting a samsung 960 pro.

the technology samsung calls pro only they have right now. in 850 pro. Theres no sane reason not to go for that.
