I have an Acer aspire 5050 that seems to have some internal issues causing it to charge when it wants to. There does not seem to be a connection for any docking station or port replicator. Is there something I can buy that connects via USB that will also charge the laptop? or any other suggestions...preferrably not sending the laptop to Acer. Thanks

A single usb port is not going to have the power to change a laptop. I highly doubt there is any kind of laptop out that has a usb charge option.

If I connect a universal docking station via usb to it will that charge it?

Chances are a docking station has nothing to charge, its just acting as a usb hub.

There's absolutely no way you can charge a laptop via USB or a USB docking station. The only way is through the AC adapter or via expansion port/dock.

Did you've read the topic. The answer is already given.

No, but you can stick one end of a USB cable into Gatorade or Powerade and plug the other end into your laptop USB port to charge up your laptop with its electrolytes.

It is physically impossible to do so for many reasons.
1: The battery charging circuitry/power supply system and the usb sub system are not inter connected. I.E. no connection no charge
2: USB hubs supply at most 5v and 2.5 amps, the typical PSU brick outputs 20v 65+amps. I.E. it would take eons to charge.
3:The usb ports on a computer can tranfer data both ways but it only transfers power one way and that is out. I.E. and this is an obvious one...it will not charge. -
Wish you luck with frying your chips behind the USB-ports

Correction: Standard USB can do up to 5V and 500mA and Bricks for notebooks are around 20V but NOT 65+ amps. You mean 65+W.
65amps would be more current than the output of AC adapters in your neighborhood combined. -
RasB hit the nail on the head (with his first comment). The charging circuit is not connected with the USB hub at all.
You cannot charge a laptop through USB.
and yes, usb provides 500mah, not 2500mah

It would have been funny to see the YouTube video of this guy trying, though.
*Camera shaking noise* "Now you see... my laptop is being charged by my desktop, through the USB... my religion is against wall plugs... you can see it works just..." POP!
anyway to charge a laptop through USB?
