it says in the product specs that it is safe to apply anywhere because it is non-capacitive, but is it really so..?
i mean, this is the first time i would upgrade a laptop and i'm planning to apply it on the cpu, gpu, and chipset northbridge when i reassemble the heatsink
thanks in advance folks

Hi.
If you follow the guide for you processor on the arctic silver website, you only use a small amount anyway as it spreads itself out when you attach the heatsink.
EDIT : You have to be careful, as you should not remove some thermal pads, as if you do, there might be to large a gap for the paste to work correctly.

thanks for the reply
uhmmm, the thermal pads you're talking about are the copper plates..? -

Hi.
It looks like a thin square of bubblegum, it sits between the core and the heatsink, they are used instead of thermal paste, but some of them can be quite thick.

if you have thermal pads, and you replace the pads with paste, the heatsink will not touch the memory/gpu. That is not good. That means that the heat is not going to be transferred to the heatsink, resulting in overheating and a burnt out gpu.
If you want to replace the pad, you will need to get a piece of copper which has teh same dimensions and thickness as the thermal pad. That will help dissipate heat better and keep the card running cooler.

ok..its clear to me now...
is it ok if i dont replace the thermal pads of the gpu..? -
wait, on a second look, i think the gpu of this laptop (msi gx600) doesn't have a thermal pad...instead it has a copper plate and thermal paste to contact it with the heatsink...
the only one here that has a thermal pad is the chipset northbridge...
so its ok for me to apply arctic mx-2 on the cpu and gpu, but not on the chipset..? thanks again -
the chipset does not get very hot, so I wouldnt worry about it too much.

ok thanks very much..wish me luck
