my t5750 cpu seems to downclock after its temperatures goes to 80c or higher

ive cleaned its vents, ive undervolted it, and recently ive just bought a laptop cooler (enermax aeolus) just so i could play games for more than 5 minutes before the cpu decided it was getting too hot to run at full speed which is getting REALLY F*ING ANNOYING

how do i fix this? :(

are you sure the heatsink is seated on the CPU correctly? Did you use any thermal paste?

the cpu is stock so that stuff the manufacturer already did right?
isnt the c2d mobile cpu's supposed to downclock at much higher temps like
    95c??

the other day the laptop shut itself off auto when it went into the mid 80c's isnt that too early to be downclocking for a mobile c2d?

Every model is rated differently my P7450 is 90C but the T5750's thermal max is ....hmm according to intel 100C, thats the max though not the point at which it downclocks.

I am guessing the manufacturer did not apply the thermal paste of pad properly. If you have warranty check if they will let you do it without voiding the warranty if not send it in.

If you do not have warranty it may be worth checking if it is infact even applied

coretemp, everest, and hw monitor give me about 15c less then real temp does for my temperatures which are like 55-60c idle and 85-95c load (with the undervolt and cooler) :(

but i think real temp is right since it reads my tj max as 100 which the intel site states so my temps def are unsually high but the weird thing is my laptop doesnt feel hot at all with the cooler on and my friend's laptop has similiar temps with the same laptop model and cpu

ive never opened laptops before or applied thermal grease so i scared about that stuff and i dont feel like sending in my laptop because ive heard horror stories about it

any other suggestions about what i can do? if i send it in would they even do anything? what if i mess something up while trying to apply ghermal grease... man this problem is geting on my nerves!! :(

Just use thermal compound that's not electric conductive, so you won't short anything. THere are lots of tutorials out there that shows u how to do it.

It would still most likely void the warranty, electrically conductive paste or not.

yodawg, what laptop are we talking about? Do you still have warranty left on it?

    its a toshiba a300-07g, c2d t5750, hd3650, 4gb,
i bought it in summer 08, nopt sure about warranty

since the opening and sending my laptop options make me nervous i was thinking maybe should i return the enermax aeolus and buy something better?
i was already buying the aeolus because it was one of best available but it barely makes a difference which dissappointed me big time

A better cooling pad wont solve this. The problem lies within the notebooks internal hardware.

I suggest you send it in.

i have my cpu undervolted from 1.25v to 1.05v which saves 5c and seems stable, is it possible that undervolting has somehow corrupted by cpu and i should maybe format my hardrive or something becuase im nervous with the act of sending my laptop in as ive heard many times they do nothing and it comes back in worse conditions? is that true?

Listen mate, your laptop has a default. Accept it and ask for a replacement, Overheating will likely cause your laptop life to decrease considerably.

Yep, the only two options you have are 1. Open up the laptop and check to see if the heatsink is seated properly/reapply thermal paste, or 2. Call the manufacturer and have thm repair it under warranty. The longer you wait, the sooner your warranty will expire and the sooner your laptop will die.

I think you guys are missing the problem
The guy said he had his Toshiba since last summer, nearly a year ago.

From what it sounds like this overheating problem just started occuring within the last few weeks.
That means one of two things,
    1) the system is completely clogged with dust even though the owner thinks the dust is out of the system. Use an air compressor to blow out the dust in the system
    2) the fan is no longer working on the inside of the laptop. A fried fan will cause the problems you are referring to. When the system gets hot, flip the system over and use a flashlight to see if the fan is spinning.

Replacing the thermal paste is not the problem. Replacing the laptop cooler is not the problem either. The problem lies with the fan/dust in the system

i thought my temps were always fine (45-55c idle,70-80c load with everest) till i started using real temp which uses my real tmax of 100c instead of the tmax in everest and other programs which uses a tmax of 85 for desktop chips. at that point i realized that my temps were pretty high (65-70c idle, 85-95c load) so i guess then from the beginning the temps were actually out of hand but the problem is becoming more apparent now since im playing cpu intensive games like tf2 and crysis which bring the temps to 95c at which the cpu throttels which happens often and is getting annoying

if i open my laptop and i dont touch anything else but just dust it will it void my warranty? how hard is it really to get into the heart of a laptop and reseat a heatsink and apply artic silver?

K-tron, he has already gone through all those options. It seems that Harper2.0's suggestions are the only ones left:

    1) Check whether thermal compound was even applied.
    2) Ensure the heat sink is making contact with the CPU die (perhaps your system uses thermal pads, and they applied paste?).

    3) Send it in for repair.

can i do deep vent cleaning without voiding my warranty if i take off the covers? can i reseat heatsinks and apply grease without warranty breaking?

i want to try and do everything on my ends before i think about sending it in because it scares me, i doubt ive ever heard a good ending from someone sending in thier laptop

I agree,i would warranty it first before i tore into it,heck they might deem it beyond repair and send you a new laptop........... :)

With an air compressor, you can get all of the dust out without taking the system apart.

Go to Toshiba's website and go to the support page. There should be a place where you can enter the serial number of your system and check the warranty status. If that doesnt work, give Toshiba a call. They will let you know what to do to check the warranty status on your system

i cleaned the vents some more and it decreased the temps a bit to the point where the cpu stopped throtteling but the idle and load temps are now
    50-60c idle
    80-85c load
which still seem a bit high but im glad at least i can use my latop without the overheating cpu
    thx repped
