I'm sure that notebook has an MXM card, just not sure which revision. Would either be 2.1 or 3.0. You can always try a Radeon HD 4650.

That thread didn't get it necessarily correct.
The 4650m to my knowledge should be compatible (seeing how one of the owners managed to upgrade it if I'm not mistaken), but might require some fiddling to get installed into 5930G (similar to what happened with the older 5920G that required vBios flashing or something else).
Also the 4650m should be of MXM-II variety... not MXM 2.1 (seeing how the sockets are different).

If I'm not mistaken, the 4650m DDR2 of MXM-II variety should be track-able for purchase, but the GDDR3 version of MXM-II is practically non-existent (similar to the case of X9100 CPU with E0 revision that is extremely expensive and very difficult to find), though the DDR2 version is maybe slightly better than 9600m GT GDDR3 (a few %), whereas the GDDR3 version might/should be on par with 9700m GT (which is merely an undervolted 9600m GT).

The thread is not necessarily incorrect. It probably hasn't been updated (or at least the Aspire 5930G info hasn't). But Deks is right. The Aspire's GPU is of the MXM-II variety and not the 2.1 like I originally thought(my bad :(). There's a BIG difference between the two even though the revision number is so close...I know, it's confusing. The 5920G is able to take the AMD cards but it requires a BIOS mod and may require a 1mm copper shim for the heatsink to contact the GPU die correctly ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...-cards/399430-my-5920g-hd-4650-need-help.html).

bull s**** even with a copper shim i was hitting 110c, i had to mod an xbox 360 fan into my coolig pad and remove my bottom cover. the gt240m runs 85c MAX and normal runs in 70s.

However if any one want a ddr2 version i have one left over.

Yes, I've read that 4650m and 4670m heat up quite a lot.
Not exactly recommended for 5930G or 5920G (seeing how the cooling in those laptops is not exactly 'efficient').
The 9600m GT GDDR3 can be a decent performer even today if you don't really push for top AAA titles (I don't, as I find 99% of them utterly boring) - and it can handle a good undervolt to 0.89V at stock clocks and a good overclock on 0.89V (it can reach and even surpass the 9700m GT mildly - bringing you to lower temperatures and higher performance all around).
