Ive have the asus G60jx with i5 core, I just maxed out my ram to 8gb. I was wondering how much would i benefit if I upgraded the hard drive to say 10000rpm or 15000rpm, can I use any type of newer laptop hard drive and what processor would ya suggest?

Thanks in advance for the answer

A faster hard drive will not help you for the gaming performance, but it will massively shorten the load times of the maps (though you still need to wait for other players when playing online :D)

I don't think 10'000 or more rpm work in laptops... at least I have never heard of this... and they are pretty pricey afaik.

If you want a faster driver get a SSD, they are pricey too but the performance is better.

As far as I remember the G60jx should work with i7 CPUs, at least with something like a 720qm, whether the performance gain is worth the upgrade is another question... it will depend on the applications imo.

10k rpm drives are 2.5" but are housed in a passive 3.5" trays (if you are thinking of WD Raptor drives). I don't recommend doing this as they already generate enough heat and my friend put a Raptor drive in his MBP and it died in a week, (surprisingly due to heat).

As stated, a faster RPM HDD/SSD won't really help with gaming performance. It is mostly limited by your graphics card, then your CPU.

Thank you everyone for the info, but my last question. What would I need to upgrade my cpu?

You would definitely need some thermal paste, ESD-protection (mat, wristband) ... and of course a compatible CPU :D

Ah, and some isopropyl alcohol or similar to remove the old paste and clean the die will be useful too.

Then you need exactly to know what you have to do, check the service manual if available or search for some teardown videos or tutorials in case you never opened this machine.

I recommend checking out the Asus forums here... I'm sure some guys have already done this and they will be able to tell you whether it's a good thing to do or not.

Well it sounds like you probably have a i5-430m? and going to a quad i7 or i7-620m would give you a little better performance depending on the games and what not but don't go into a CPU change expecting night and day.

And as for the hard drive, if you want more performance from a HD get a SSD, boots fast, applications just open in a snap, wont give you any FPS.

If you're upgrading for gaming, you don't have too many options.

Upgrading your hard drive will have practically no impact on gaming. The only thing that upgrading your hard drive will do is impact game load times - no impact on framerates or gameplay performance. If you do upgrade your storage system and get an SSD (the fastest mechanical HDD is 7200rpm - no 10k or 15k rpm drives on 2.5" form factors), then you WILL get a nice boost in overall system performance. But that performance will not apply to game framerates.

Upgrading your CPU will also have practically no impact on gaming. Games are GPU-limited, not CPU-limited. You may see a very small incremental increase in framerates (0% - 10%), but it will not be anything noticeable and will absolutely not be worth the money. The only exception to this case is a very small handful of games that do depend on the CPU (Starcraft 2, GTA4, Civ5) will get a larger performance bump than 10%. But do not expect a CPU upgrade to do very much for you.

The only real way to improve your gaming performance (framerates) is to get a new GPU - which for you means getting a new laptop.
