I bought a new HD for my old old old laptop. I ran the Recovery OS disk that came with the computer.
First problem was after the Windows XP loading screen loaded, it said it could not find some exe file names c_866 or something like that. I had to re-insert the disk, and locate the file in the I386 folder.
After I did that, the first one loaded up fine, but when the desktop loaded, none of the programs that first came with the computer where installed, and I could't find a way to get the wireless connection to work.
So I figured the installation went wrong somewhere, so I re-ran the disk, and when the computer restarted, it came up with this error:
autochk program not found skipping autocheck
Then the computer restarted itself, and came up with the error again, and again, etc.
Is my Recovery CD messed up, or is it something else?
If it is my CD, can I just COPY and PASTE the information on another blank CD, and run it?
Or do I need to order a new disk?

I thought recovery discs only work when you have an operating system installed on the harddrive.
I have never heard of that error message before.
Is this the gateway with the samsung harddrive?
You may want to try installing the operating system over a USB optical drive. The optical drive in your laptop may not be reading the files properly on your disc, causing errors.

Well apparently the guy from Gateway I talked to, said it would work. And it did, it just didn't install all the programs, and I believe some drivers.
And yes, this is the new Samsung drive.
And now I am re-re-doing the install, and it is telling me it didn't install some type of file, so I think the CD might be shot.
I would also do it with a USB Optical Drive, but I don't own one. -
You can try putting the cd in your desktop. You should be able to use Nero to burn an image of the disc, which you can than recreate a new disc from.
Or
if you want. Try cleaning the lens on your current laptop optical drive. Use a little rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and slowly swirl around, in order to clean the lens. The lens is about 5mm in diameter. Cleaning it should make it work a little better.

I will try that when this last re-install is finished. If it works, I will just download and install any drivers that it didn't install.
If the burning and cleaning does not work, I will order a new disk from Gateway. And if that fails, buy a new CD drive, or probably a USB Optical Drive. -
See if any friends or neighbors have a usb optical drive. It could save you some time and money
If you have another laptop, you could always try swapping optical drives.

I think it's a lot more likely that the issue is the optical drive.
-
Well I have an older Acer laptop, which is roughly the same size as the Gateway, and I have one in my Alienware, which is a CD+DVD RW w/ Lighscribe.
Problem is, I have no idea how to take out, and swap drives. -
Bottom of the laptop usually has a single screw holding in the optical drive. They are even usually kind enough to put a little picture of a CD next to it.
-
-
The drives should fit.
Usually when you remove the optical drive their is a small metal bracket on the back of it.
You may need to install the bracket from the acer on say your alienware optical drive, if you were to use that one.
All of your systems have ATAPI based optical drives, so all of them are interchangeable.

Ok, I switched out the Acer with the Gateway CD drive, and I am running the Recovery OS disk right now.
If it doesn't work, I will try and burn the information on a new CD. And if that don't work, order a new OS disk. And if THAT don't work, then I'm not sure where to go from there, but will cross that bridge when I get to it.
Will post again when done.
Thanks K-TRON and Help! for showing me how to switch out drives. It's nice to expand my knowledge, was mainly a Software guy, it's nice to add Hardware to the list. -
If that doesn't work, try to get a hold of some OEM media and do a clean install. This is my much preferred method of installing Windows anyway.
-
Well apparently the CD Drive was the culprit.
Switched out drives, and the install went very well. Only thing it did not do was install a bunch of drivers, but after a little while of downloading and installing from Gateway's website, I got all the drivers done.
Thanks again to Help!, and K-TRON for helping me out. -
Cool, glad everything worked out.
If you need anything, just let us know
