i have just acquired an acer travelmate 290d laptop,it boots up but only views through an external monitor.
the lcd on the laptop lights up but shows nothing.
my question is could this be an LCD inverter problem or a problem elsewhere.
any help would be extremely helpful.
    regards mel.

The inverter is for the backlight. You say the display lights up which suggested that the backlight is working. Check at the display in a darkened room.

If the inverter has died you can usually see text, etc, on the screen, but very faint.

If the backlight is working then the problem could be the video signal connector to the LCD. The firat place I would check is the connector to the motherboard. This could be under the keyboard and relatively easy to check. I would try to disconnect and reconnect it.

Sounds like either the LCD Inverter, the LCD cable, LCD backlight, or LCD itself is broken.

If you've got an nVidia graphics card, right click on the desktop, go to the driver and check that the LCD is set as the primary monitor.

I guess I should have asked...if the laptop does not have the external screen attached, can you get into BIOS and see the BIOS from the internal screen? If not, then your LCD is messed up.

took off then reconnected the connecter to the mobo, didn't make any difference, nothing shows on screen at all.
can't access the bios through the lcd, only through crt.
could the problem be the signal from the mobo or lcd cables or the lcd itself.
    Changed the inverter no difference.
    Anybody got any ideas???.
    regards mel.
