    hi forum,

    i have a 2gb ddr ram that has a bad chip

    If I just pop off 1gb chips of the 2gb ddr ram can I still use the good 1gb side of the ddr ram?

    No that will destroy it. Maybe you can eBay to find a cheap RAM to fix it.

    so if i take off the bad chips on the ram the DDR ram circuit will be disconnected?

    Yes, it'll try to write/read to addresses that are no longer there. Now, if you were really proficient (and had the proper tools) you could save $0.52:
    $10.50 for 2GB DDR3 PC1333 sodimm
    $9.99 for 4x 128MB ram IC

    Need a rework station or wing it with a hot air gun. Plus, you'll need to know which IC(s) are bad.

    No waste here, the chip did what it could for as long as possible. The waste would be spending time, effort and $$ for almost certain failure. When just a little more $$ will get you a fully working model.

    Take the SoDimm in your hand, say your thanks quietly and (standing over a recycling bin) let go.

    It's the noble thing to do. :)

    If your BIOS is not able to automatically disable bad memory locations and you can still post you can add a patch to modify the E820 map (legacy) or memmap (UEFI) to allocate the bad addresses as unusable so when the OS loads it knows about them and does not try to use them.
