I've got a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz processor and I'm not sure which barebone case to get. I have a huge Sony Vaio notebook with DVD burner and all the extras, but I really don't want it. I'm looking to put the essentials into as thin as possible of a case with the best available battery life. I know the processor will soak up some battery life, but I'm looking to dump the optical drive and use this computer mainly for simple software and wireless internet. I'm just having a hard time finding an case guaranteed to run a P4 2.66 GHz. I'd like to know for sure a something will work before I fully jump into it. Thanks

I would strongly recommend that you reconsider. P4 desktop processors are outdated, slow, run really hot, not too mention they suck juice. An inexpensive laptop can be had that will put a p4 to shame. I doubt you can find a barebones with a p4 socket. If you are still looking @ barebones, consider MSI.

its going to be hard to find a new barebones for that P4 that you have. Currently there is only one P4 system left on the market, but its LGA775 and not socket 478... which is what you are looking for.
In any case, here are the top 2 site that sells notebook barebones:
- RJtech.com
- ISTNC.com
Good luck, but I would recommend to get a budget CPU (Celeron or Sempron) for whatever barebones you choose if you want to save money.... and the new budget processors are still faster than your old P4.

Unfortunately, Pentium 4 + notebook = horrendous battery life.
Best option is to get a Pentium M chip, as it eclipses the P4 chip, as it can provide the least heat and the most battery life. -
Put your P4 into a scavenged desktop system rescued from a trip to the landfill! Ask @ all local computer stores & various IT guys @ companies, schools, etc to save you a case with burnt CPU/Mainboard they are throwing out. Buy new mainboard & PSU, use as server or backup machine, or donate the operating unit to a needy Senior citizen that has dial-up access available. Then buy a Palm TX
. If really want to build up a kit, buy an Asus Bb from ebay (& the guts 4 it) and built it up

I second all the above comments.
P4 + Laptop = REALLY BAD IDEA
Go with a desktop for that old processor. -
yeah how hard is it to build on a barebones laptop kit and does ne one no where i can get an alienware barebones kit
-
I thought the alienware chassis was also used by other manufacturers. Unfortunately, if you want it to look like an alienware you'll have to:
a) mod it yourself
b) buy an Alienware since I'd doubt they'd just sell you the chassis -
-
I should have originally said that Alienware won't likely sell you a barebones kit. The difficulty of building a custom notebook I've heard is not much different than a desktop, beside the fact that you have to worry about the choice of pieces that goes into it and the space you have to work inside. By this I mean you need to make sure the CPU, GPU, etc. all have adequate cooling provided by the chassis you get.
By modding, I mean, you'll have to (off top of my head):
1) get the rubber and cut it out for the panel and whatever else
2) possibly change the paint color
3) cut a hole in the back of your lcd to house an led and your Alienware head.
4) other things to make it more Alienwarelike.
But very likely, unless you're a master, you had best just buy an Alienware rather than try to mod a laptop to look like one. -
how hard is it to change the paint and could i possibly just buy a cheaper alienware like used off ebay and possibly souped up to a gaming beast. Do u think i could ask my local computer shop to change the led light behind alienhead if i were to get the alienware.
