http://www.newegg.com/ is a good place to buy laptop hardware, including HDD.
And 7200rpm laptop HDDs are available. They have been for a long time now. -
i found this seems a good deal ? lots of people wrote good reviews about it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152111
but i'm not sure if T42P is SATA or not, tried to located some info on ibm.com but couldn't, how to know ?
also is it better togo for 8mb cache 5400rpm or 7200rpm with no 8mb cache ? -
Bashar,
I have moved this thread to the hardware section so you may receive better assistance. -
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-57839#stor
The manufacturer specifications sheet says that the T42p uses an ATA connection, not SATA. -
so non of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...1035507776&bop=And&Order=REVIEWS&Pagesize=100 can work on T42P?
-
also whats the biggest disk i can get on T42P from your experience ?
i'm running unbuntu and xp and might get rid of xp forever -
i found few on ebay buy all has 8mb buffer and 5400rpm, should i lost the 7200rpm since its 8mb buffer?
-
and does the brand really differ ? for example this one says IBM http://cgi.ebay.com/160GB-IBM-Think...495968QQihZ007QQcategoryZ158852QQcmdZViewItem is that OK ? or hitachi better?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380+1035907889&name=ATA-6
These are what you want to look at: ATA-6 drives. The maximum spindle speed is 7200RPM, and the largest capacity is 250GB. -
or WD is better @ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136159 ?
-
the fastest ATA harddrive is the Samsung HM160HC, it is a 160gb 5400rpm drive which has only one platter. It is faster than every 7200rpm ATA based laptop harddrive
You should read my review of the Samsung drive, it is really a good drive, and it is large and affordable. It is the fastest ata drive, but if you need more space the 250gb 5400rpm from WD is your only option for more capacity and a decent speed.
Here is the link to my review:

My thread has comparisons of the WD 250gb BEVE drive and the Samsung Hm160HC, and the Samsung wins

i dont see any 7200RPM at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380+1035907889&name=ATA-6 ?
-
the IBM disks at ebay are ATA-7 and these on newegg are ATA-6 , does it differ ?
-
ATA 6 and 7 are basically the same thing, ATA 6 is capable of 100mb/sec and ATA7 is capable of 133mb/sec, however no ATA harddrive can do that much, the fastest one is the HM160HC and that does 52mb/sec on average.
Trust me man, this drive is faster than any 7200rpm drive for the ATA interface.
7200rpm drives were a huge hit because people thought they were the fastest and they sold out months ago.

i dont need that 250gb 160gb could do very well i'm on 60gb (actual 54gb) and i'm fine adding another 100gb would make my happier
any advise where to get HM160HC ? i dont see any of em on ebay nor newegg, only on buy.com
googled and got http://www.alwayslowest.com/AL/index.cfm?fuseaction=shop.dspSpecs&part=2343363 not sure how trusted they are though -
also found this on google http://www.futurepowerpc.com/scripts/product.asp?PRDCODE=HDSA-NHM160HC&REFID=FR

I bought mine from Lagoom, since it was the most reputable site which had it for a decent price. I paid $75.14 shipped to my house.
Run a quick reseller rating on the site, before buying.
Lagoom has it really cheap, I may just buy a second for another laptop I have. It is an awesome drive and for ~$60-70 shipped, you cant beat it.
They have it for $59.20, + whatever shipping is, which is less than I paid for mine a month ago. Plus since I wrote lagoom a reseller rating thing I get $10 off my next purchase, so I am definitely getting a secong one soon.

another hm160hc owner, it is a great drive and will make your system run as fast as it can. Mine is running perfect so far, and it is very quiet and cool operating.
Tell us how you love the drive when you install it
