taking apart my laptop and scrapping mine..
i'm thinking an mp3 player mod?

Hmm, it'd make for a pretty chunky mp3 player...
I take it you're upgrading the hdd in your current notebook? If so, an aftermarket external enclosure to turn it into a backup drive would be a great option... you never can have too many backups. -
I got three and have seen people lose all their data because they didn't back anything up.
-
I did the same thing, and I tossed the thing in an external enclosure. It's very nice having the extra storage and backup.

Could anyone point me in the direction of a good external enclosure for a HD, both Notebook and Desktop drives, while we're on the matter.
-
Me too, i use it for extra storage and backup for mp3, pictures and peronal data. When i need to retrieve the data, then plug it in to my destop or laptop. When i have to transfer to mp3 file to a mp3 player, plug to use it. If i don't need any data transfer, i unplug it. Seldom to power on the HD all the time.

This is the one I use, but newegg has a ton to choose from in both 2.5" and 3.5". I've heard good things about Vantec enclosures, never used one myself though.

I use this one.

I'd recommend any of the Vantec enclosures:

I have this one with an 80GB 5400RPM drive and it is excellent.
best things to do with a spare 2.5'' hdd
