i'm thinking about this upgrade to my m1730...lenovo has a bd burner drive available in the slim size...

but a few questions: most of the bd media i have seen for sale in stores is the 25GB flavor. i believe that is single-layer bd, is there no dual-layer available yet ?

i am not sure if the drive is also capable of dual-layer, here it is:

so i'm not sure if it's worth it to upgrade to this right now, comments any1 ?

I guess it is capable of writing and reading BD DL. (400bucks = Acer Aspire 5315, with a T8100 CPU mod :D)

    oops...didn't read the entire description....sorry.

so how many folks here are using bd already in their machines ? it would be nice to be able to back up an entire multimedia library on 1 bd disc.

I'd guess from the quote Andy gave that this is capable of double layer. However you should think carefully if this is really worth it financially.

In very few cases for the common laptop user will having a blu-ray drive be useful. In fact, I can't think of even one reason I would need one in my laptop.

So give thought about how likely you are to have need for this over the lifetime of your current laptop. If the answer is unlikely, then put that $400+ aside in savings for your new laptop which will probably come with a blu-ray drive in a year or two.

true, but that disc can most likely be used only in ur home... (as said, most people dont have BR... most likely ur friends dont have BR)..

and a BR Disc is like $10... for 50GB?

    i rather pay $100 for a 500GB/1TB external HDD

whole point of blu-ray is to play the HD movie format. the gobs of storage on these discs is an added plus....

it was the same way when dvd was introduced and everybody was using cd. we went from 650/700MB to 4.7/8.5GB. Now we have 25/50GB.

being that i don't have another blu-ray device and my machine runs smooth and media center works fine, popping a bd burner into this machine is worth it.

but still, i will wait a little longer and see how blu-ray matures before i buy a burner...

I suppose if the cost seems justifiable for you to be able to watch HD movies on your laptop then it's understandable.

If you make decent cash, travel a lot, and like to have cutting edge graphics, then go for it! :) However if any of those three things don't apply to you then it may not be worth it. In my opinion of course.

I do plan to buy myself a Blu-Ray player to compliment the LCD tv I plan to buy soon, but doubt I'll ever desire too much in HD quality from my laptop.

Of course you make a good point about the move into the DVD world. I was one of the people that was convinced DVD weren't worth the switch from VHS... Until I owned a DVD player... Soon after that I threw out all my VHS's haha.

little by little i've been moving away from desktops. since the m1730 is basically a desktop replacement, i would jack it into an HDTV for movies, etc. only thing i don't like about this thing is it's got no HDMI.

dvd's look pretty good as it is now, i don't see a quality improvement in picture when viewed on a 17" screen.
