Every day I carry my laptop up and down the steps, e.g. taking it to watch Hulu at night upstairs. Does it do more damage to the hinges to always open and close the lid, or more damage to carry it opened? I had been carrying it opened but since my Dell Vostro 1500 now has 2 broken hinges after 4 years, I'm thinking it might have been better to close it for carrying. (I did always carefully stabilize the lid with one hand while carrying to keep it from flopping around and leveraging on the hinges as little as possible.)

Hinges loosen with use over time. But leaving it open puts more stress on them. There is also more potential for damage when the machine is open, especially if dropped.

You can always replace a hinge though.
