    Hey there,

I am new to the forum hope somebody can give me a hand.

I have a Toshiba a200, couple months ago I hit it hard against a wall by accident, the plastic frame suffered quite a bit of damage and worse of all when I opened the lid something cracked, no not the screen thank god the screen is working...

Overall the laptop is fine, the only thing that stopped working was the external video connector and the HD is going dead with fancy clicks and neat bsods when it cant read/write at random times. The laptop is out of warranty and I checked at a couple toshiba certified people and the budget to fix it was prohibitive(enough to buy a brand new laptop..).

So I decided to go on a little adventure and opened it up to try and understand what i could do. I found out what the cracking sound was, the two metal pieces on each side of the screen lid cracked apart, leaving the screen half hanging and making it hold only on the plastic frame, which is pathetically weak. One of those pieces was attached to the video output so i assume thats why it stopped working, i could live without it do, my priority is to get the screen to open and close properly, and get a new HD.

My question is, is there anyone I could buy the whole laptop frame, or parts of it?

anyway, thanks for your help in advance!

    Gnoze5.

Replacing the entire chassis of the laptop requires a large investment of time and money that simply isn't worth the repair; you may as well write off the laptop as a lost cause.

That said, you do have an important priority: SAVE YOUR DATA. I cannot stress this enough, as you should have done this the moment you learned the hard disk was on the verge of failing. You can use a Linux LiveCD (try Ubuntu) to mount the drive in the Live environment and rescue any data by transferring it to a USB external HD or something.

    Good luck!

you could check ebay for a broken notebook and steal it's chassis.

Also lot's of toshiba models share the same chassis so it should be easy to find something that will fit.

you can find new toshiba notebook parts here:
    http://tosh.empr.com.au/toshiba_parts.asp?cID=6&toshL=1&cNa=Notebooks

that's the aus page, I don't know where you live.

I dont think it would be too hard to DIY.

Otherwise you could sell the notebook for parts, then buy a new one...

I would argue that doing such an overhaul is too costly since the price of the parts and time spent is likely to approach or outweigh the value of the current unit. But I will concede that this rule does depend from case to case.

    BASE ASSY = $38.67
    LCD COVER ASSY = $36.58
    COVER ASSY(low-c-assy+mask) = $107.64
    LCD MASK ASSY = $14.63

those are AU prices for my notebook.
I'm guessing yours would be simmilar.

so it really depends on what's broken.
you could end up spending lots of $$$.
