this may seem like an odd question so pretend i know next to nothing about notebooks (not far from the truth)

i value the size of a small laptop for portability, like HP's dv4t (14.1") for instance. however being it has a 1280x800 resolution, its a small screen for some tasks, so there may come a time i'd want a better resolution, bigger screen, work area, etc. WOULD investing in a decent monitor provide me with all the benefits im losing with not getting a dv5t(15.4") or dv7(17")???

    i appreciate the help

It would provide everything for day to day usage, but with games you would not be able to run them at as high detail.

Actually you would get more than a 15" screen since you could have both monitors showing things ;)
