my laptop specs state that my laptop's maximum supported ram is 1.5gb, however i used the crucial memory advisor which tells me,
    Maximum Memory Capacity: 4194304 MB
    Currently Installed Memory: 1536 MB
my laptop has 512mb in built ram and I added 1gb in the one slot provided.
if i removed the 1gb and put in a 2gb one what would happen?
    thanks

You'd probably end up with 2.5GB.

What laptop do you have? I have never seen a 1.5GB cap on laptops before.

Your chipset is 945GM it can support up to 4GB's. Now you may have BIOS limitations. I did read a Cnet review, had 1GB and said maxed out. I have seen this kind of stuff b/4, no empty slots so they say max. If I find more will post. Looks like Asus is your best answer. If it is a BIOS limitation might be updates or hacks.

That is an ultraportable machine, so my guess is that it has 512MB soldered on the motherboard (the Dell D420 has 512MB soldered, and the D430 has 1GB). I can see the OP knows that, but just FYI for all.

The chipset used can only support up to 2GB of RAM, like mine does. If you put in a 2GB stick, you'll have 2.5GB but only see 2GB.

I could be wrong about the amount of RAM supported by the chipset. But I read it from an Intel document (not personal knowledge per se) here is the link. Section 1.1.2 second line "Maximum Memory supported: up to 4 GB at 400, 533 and 667 MHz". If I am missing something please teach me so I stop being innacurate. I do know sometimes the correct answer is better than my answer.

my s6f's motherboard allows up to 4gb, i am just wondering if the max. ram is 1.5gb because that's the max ram the bios supports. I found a 2gb ram for £30, to take my ram up to 2.5gb. what do u think wud happen? would it not be recognized at all? would it damage my laptop in any way? what do u suggest i do?
    thanks for your efforts lol

I do not think it will damage anything, but if the BIOS does not support then either will not boot or will just not see. Look for BIOS updates or try and figure out "is there a reason" it is limited.
