It's completely and utterly possible, but why would you want to do it?

The system will not power on without a CMOS/BIOS.

If your system has a defective BIOS, you can buy a new bios chip from BIOSMAN. All you need is a copy of the Bios file which is loaded on to the chip, and a good soldering iron.

A computer can run and function near normal without a BIOS battery.
However every time you restart your system the time resets to 1:00 and you cannot save any changes in the BIOS. The battery serves the purpose of supplying the BIOS with power so that the settings can be saved. The Bios is a memory cell, so when power is lost it simply resets itself

CMOS has a lot of different meanings, please specify CMOS as in CMOS battery, CMOS as in webcam cmos, CMOS as in Bios battery, etc

As long as the standby power is availiable, restart, shutdown..etc will not reset the bios. You can save to the bios if you want and the settings will still be availbable the next time the comptuer starts.

In a laptop, that's almost always the case. It's rarely for someone to unplug both the battery and the AC. If AC fails, or unplugged, battery will keep the bios setting retained.

Only when the standby power is cut or unavailiable, bios will reset.

BTW... it's called BIOS, not CMOS, if you're still up for knowledge.

CMOS is a type of fabrication process. There are many other types such as SOI which AMD processor use.

and the battery is the cmos battery, or are you sayin its a bios battery?

what do you mean by a locked harddrive?

You can physically remove any harddrive from any laptop. The harddrive is always upgradeable.
If your harddrive has a password on it, it is against nbr rules to state how to get around such a thing

Sorry, I didnt mean to be offensive.
I have not seen a harddrive with a switch on it in years. The last time I saw one was back in MFM days.

Your Toshiba uses SATA 9.5mm thick 2.5" drives.
Any SATA I or SATA II drive will fit in your laptop

Here is the newegg link you should look under for harddrives:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201035915133&name=SATA%203.0Gb%2fs

Good drives to look at are the Hitachi 7K320, WD5000BEVT, Hitachi 5k500.b, Hitachi 5k320, WD3200bekt, seagate momentus 7200.3

I have one question for you,

Are you buying a new harddrive to rule out the harddrive being a problem in your laptop?
I only ask because it seems like you have a hardware issue with your laptop which you want to fix in order to get the system running

If the harddrive has a password, you need to try all of the passwords you can think of. If you cannot remember it, than you need to format the harddrive and start a new

It truly is difficult to troubleshoot this issue when your HD is locked since it only complicates things...
