There are a number of very good USB and Firewire "soundcards" (really enclosed units, not cards obviously) out there. If you're looking for something more portable, I think that Creative makes an Audigy 2 in a PCMIA form factor.

Right there is an audigy PCMCIA. But watch out if your laptop has a PCMCIA or not. Most of the new laptops are now shipping with Express Card, instead of the older PCMCIA, and I am not aware of any Express Card sound cards available.

Another good alternative is the Turtle Beach USB Sound Card. For the price, it provides very good sound quality.

I use the Turtlebeach Audio Advantage Micro. It works very well, and its very portable.

So does this "USB sound card" bypass the codec inside the laptop? Or does it just process the sound for a second time? I am confused...

The internal sound card is disabled and the USB/PCMCIA card does the whole job. And your output goes to external speakers. You cannot use the built-in speaker with a USB or PCMCIA card since they are wired to the built-in one
