Currently I am using a DLINK NAS and finds it not satisfactory - it's FTP Server does not support update filestamp protocol which is very important for me to keep track of date/time of the pictures saved. I do not like to use WIndows File sharing protocol because it can be used to spread virus. I want to limit the access to FTP.
I therefore plan on setting up a dedicated notebook (or micro desktops) for Data Storage/Backup of pictures, videos. It will be running 24x7 and therefore, the HD has to be very low power consumption, High Capacity. Speed isnt important as it will be accessed via LAN or WIFI.
Can anyone suggest any HD?
THanks!

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD7500BPVT (750GB 5400RPM) is a good choice. Its idle power consumption is about 0.63W, which is quite low. 750GB is the highest capacity available in a 2.5", 9.5mm height.
Make sure you use an OS like Windows 7/Vista that supports the new 4k sector hard drive format - that is what the WD drive uses.
For comparison, a Hitachi 7K500 (500GB 7200RPM) uses 0.89W at idle. Its constant load numbers are a bit higher than the WD but not by much.
If your notebook/server can take 12.5mm height drives, then WD makes a 1TB drive in a 2.5" form factor. I don't have power consumption numbers for that though. -
Get a laptop or mini pc (probably cheaper) with eSata. Then get an external 3.5" eSata enclosure and put a 5400rpm harddrive in it like WD Green Power.
Personally I'd just get a WHS. I love my HP EX495. -
Seagate 5400.6 640GB uses very little power:

Here's a power consumption comparision in between WD blue and Toshiba drives from mfg website. The 1TB 2.5 WD power specs are listed on there too. Then take a look at this feature: http://www.wdc.com/en/library/other/2579-001116.pdf
