I've always been a huge fan of ccleaner in my old conventional hard drives....my question is.....can I still use ccleaner all the time in my new SSD without any negative effects?? I know the more use the SSD gets....eventually it will slow....will all the extra "ccleaning" make this worse??

I use CCleaner often on my SSD. I don't see how it can be detrimental as long as you're not using the wipe free space option. All it does is delete files, and I don't see how that can be bad for the SSD.

I too use it regularly on my M4. I'm sure there is no negative effects.

no effects. the amount of increased writes that it would create would impact your ssd as much as throwing a coin onto the earth changes it's path in space.

I use cccleaner and run it every time before I either shut down my M14X or leave it overnight to collect garbage. I am using Google Chrome and cccleaner cleans about 300-500 Mb of 'browsing cache' files every day. The highest size I have seen was 1.2 Gigs after streaming a few movies online.

However, I started using RAMDISK and put Google Chrome cache on my RAM. Browser is much faster now, there are no unnecessary writes to SSD and using CCCleaner finds 2 to 3 (!) Mb on my SSD after a long session of browsing.

I have it set to run at boot. With daily use since July, my 128gb SSD is sitting at 99% life remaining.

no. i mean, every single bit that gets written changes the live of the ssd. but ccleaner does not do much to a disk actually, ergo the impact is so tiny you'll never notice it.

you know that not killing your cache would be even faster? that's what it's for.

I know. Just a nickel on the earth, lol. People still paranoid about SSD writes. Although still a good question.

Tell me more please. I have superfetch and prefetch forced on my SSD. With killing cache do you mean RAMDISK after restart deletes Google Chrome cache so it must be written again?

Or is it CCCleaner not to be used often?

    Thanx for input so far.

I think he meant by disabling the chrome cache on the SSD and forcing it to use a ramdisk. SSD's are fast enough that theres probably only marginal improvement speed wise by using a ramdisk instead of on-ssd cache. Similarly, I don't use superfetch on my ssd because frankly it's fast enough that the fraction of a second difference in load time is meaningless.

    Thanx, now it makes sense.

However, I have RAMDISK installed 3 weeks. I must really point out that I see and feel difference when loading pages in Google Chrome. Access times for RAM are lower than 0.0 ms. My SSD is 0.2 ms. Now when a complicated internet page loads there are many small files written. Simply for me 0.6 seconds page load time with RAMDISK vs 1.5 seconds with SSD is (suddenly lol) important somehow.

I have run an ATTO benchmark for people interested in transfer speeds with RAMDISK 1 Gig RAM partition.

cache is there to make your internet experience FASTER. what is faster? your ssd with multiple 100 MB/s, and nano-second access times? or your internet, with MAYBE a frew MB/s, and tens of microsecond access times?

that's the idea of a cache: to prevent needing to download the stuff from the slow internet.

Running a freespace cleaner will only write a bunch of data to those blocks and then delete them, negating the TRIMing that has happened indicating which blocks are safe to overwrite, and/or interfere with the firmware garbage collection routines. It could also cause severe performance issues since filling your drive can have detrimental effects. Over time it should correct itself, but an older Samsung I had, even a secure erase wouldn't correct it.

well the file is AS SSD, i think i found it on the OCZ forum (linked from one of the posts here on NBR) any how, havebeen using the program with FF clicked, and in ~3 months the SSD is still doing 502/ 196 with about 80~GB free..... i was under the impression using the FF clean option it actually cleared out the deleted rubbish securely and make the drive more effective
