Running on battery? A lot of features that are time intensive disable themselves while on battery (defrag, etc). Try plugging it in and trying again.

Edit: Are you trying to install? I know Vista and 7 complain loudly if you try to install while on battery. Again, plug it up and try again.

Yea, I'd say plug it up and try again. Also while it says it's formatting, is there any HDD activity lights lighting up or is it just not running? Best I remember it'll take Win98 forever to format a drive over 20GB because it doesn't do a "quick" format like WinXP introduced.

    Hi Jeremysdad
Yes it is plugged in. still says formatting harddrive but shows 0% formatted.

Harddrive is 6 GB and using win 98. battery is charged and adaptor plugged in.
Still says formatting harddrive after starting bootup but doesn't change from 0% formated.
    thanks

Are you sure the drive even works? Do you have an enclosure you can try or perhaps another computer you can plug it into to see if you can access the data?

    Hi Brian
i'm not sure if the drive works. no i can't plug it into another unit. i assumed since 98 was attempting to format the harddrive it was working. where would i get a new harddrive to fit a panasonic CF27?

    thanks

Determine what brand of hard drive is in it, go to that manufacturer's support site and download their hard drive diagnostic utility, create the self booting diagnostic disk, then boot to it and run the most exhaustive test available to determine if the drive is still good or not.

Probably eBay would be your best bet for a replacement HDD. Exact model details would help.
