having the battery out is the best. Charge the battery to 40% and take it out, put in in a cool dry place.

I leave my battery in and the notebook is connected to AC power most of the time.
But I think it depends on the battery type and the charger.
If you have a bad charger, you should leave the battery out.

How old is your battery, if you use your notebook on battery all the time it may only last a year or two if you are lucky.

If you remove the battery and you have a brownout you will loose anything you are working on, I use my notebook on mains power 95% of the time and i leave the battery installed , but i do a battery calibrate once a month to keep it healthy and lets you know the real wear level, also if the battery is going to go bad it will most likely happen during a calibrated and hopefully it will still be in warranty so no problems.

Using your battery as a backup power supply may be convenient, but it will significantly reduce the useful life of your battery and therefore be very expensive.

Instead, you should buy a UPS/surge protector for one quarter the price of a new battery. It's not only more efficient (you can protect several devices at once), but a heck of a lot less costly.

Oh! and one more thing OP: I think it's time to get a new battery. :p
