    Hi
i just got a new laptop, trouble is im saving up for a bigger SSD...i have an 128gb already in old laptop...my t500 hinge has snapped making it immobile.
I wont use the t420 until i get a new SSD because i have unfinished projects on it the old computer and i would need a clean install.

So i was thinking is it ok to sort out the t420 with all the programs it needs then image it to the new SSD when it arrives? Otherwise it's just sitting there doing nothing and i don't wont to give myself more work to sort it when SSD arrives. It already has a OS and drivers from a clean install not much bloat.. or...do i give it rand new install OEM or keep the install as is and add programs then image it to new SSD? I assume SSDs are not to bothered with non stream lined os's and hardly makes much speed difference compared to an mechanical HDD

    Thanks

Not really clear what you're asking?

Are you replacing a system with an identical unit? Or, are you moving/upgrading between two different models?

SSD's, just like HDD's benefit greatly from a clean O/S install, doing any WU available, installing specific drivers for that system and then finally installing the programs and the data you use. Any other method used to get to that state is less than optimum and will give less than satisfactory results (depending on the workload the SSD will be subject to).

I think you need to organize your thoughts and present your case a little clearer - then you'll have a chance of receiving the help/advice you're looking for.

you only do clean OS install to remove the bloatware that came with the OS when you bought the computer. If you have that already, all you do is clone it to new drives.

now depending on what product you use to clone, some may align the partition onto the new SSD while others will not. Try the free version of Partition Assistant and use the "migrate OS to SSD" option to transfer your already set up OS partition, it says it should align the partition fine but I've never tried it. I have the pro version of that software and used it to align my SSD after I cloned the OS onto it with Acronis True Image Home 2011, as it did the offset to the 63rd sector just like with HDD thus I had to realign with Partition Assistant afterwards.

or you can do it manually - create properly offset partition with DiskPart first, then restore image of your OS install onto the newly created partition.

you JUST have to use acronis soft which will make CLONE from your current HDD to your SSD..

... and terribly misalign the partition to the default 63rd sector, which not only causes slower speeds on the SSD but also signifficanlty shortens its life due to the increased write amplification.
