i would suggest getting the trial version of acronis. it let's you complete a full clone of your hd, even though it's the trial version. anyway, i believe it works for vista, but am not 100% sure.

yes, acronis works just great for vista

get the acronis true image home 11

you can copy a partition or an entire hard drive, save to a usb hard drive etc, it's not picky like the image version in vista ultimate

    edit: check your pm's ;)

WILL it boot up once i install the cloned usb drive into the actual laptop?
Are there any security issues with vista being locked to original hard drive?

I've cloned my Vista system (x86 Ultimate) using True Image Home 11, and it worked fine- once I swapped the drives (my HP dv9000t has 2 internal drives), I was all set. I also used it to make a bootable image for an old Inspiron 5160 with the new drive in an external enclosure. IIRC, True Image balked at doing a straight clone to USB though- hence creating an image of the old 20GB drive onto the 120GB drive I ended up using.
