Can I use a compaq monitor for a dell laptop? Will it automatically detect it? How do I disable the laptop screen so I only use the external monitor? Thanks

Any external VGA monitor will work with ANY laptop. Brand is ignored.

Some laptops have an option in the BIOS to use only the external monitor, however if yours does not, you can change your default monitor and disable the internal via either the Windows display settings or your video cards control panel (for example, the ATI control panel). Any of those three options will work.
