I just bought a compaq v5000z and the fan is always on. Most of the time it is on a very low speed, and every 15 minutes or so it'll go on a high setting for a few seconds. Even though the fan is mostly on a low setting, it is still annoying. Is this normal?

The fan was on almost on the time as well, so it might affect you as well.

when the computer is plugged in, the cpu is speed and cpu voltage is a constant 100% and 1.5V, respectively. the battery savings and fan speed gauge point all the way to the left (min). cpu temp is 0c (why isn't it giving me the temp?).
when its unplugged and running off the battery, the cpu speed and cpu voltage drop to a constant 36% and 1.0v.
whats the next step to get this fixed?

    i really appreciate your help!

I say undervolt it. Check the undervolting thread in the HP forum here.

Try reinstalling the processor driver. Download the latest driver from AMD's website and delete and reinstall the software. In most cases this should fix the problem.

That's the problem, I was using the latest driver which gave me the problem. I downloaded an outdated driver and was able to understep. If anyone needs the good driver, ask and I'll host it for download.

changing my power scheme to 'portable/laptop' from 'home/office desk' decreased the cpu utilization to 36% and the voltage to 1.0v. (works with the most recent processor driver also). so that solves that problem.
however, the fan still never turns off. tech support said its most likely a hardware problem, and so i am now waiting for a replacement. hopefully the new one works out perfect.

i got my replacement laptop today. i have the same problem, the fan never turns off! so i assume this is a normal thing among all v5000z compaqs. am i the only one that notices and is bothered by this?
i might think about undervolting it, but it just bothers me to think that i need to undervolt it to get a 'normal' laptop.

although the fan never turns off, it is typically on the low setting. you hear it mainly through the keyboard. every 10 min or so, it goes the fan goes on the high setting for about 10 seconds and you hear it more from the back.
    anyone else notice this?

Did you check your latest laptops voltages with AMD Power Monitor? Are you sure that it's not the hard drive making the sound? That's the ony other thing I can think of.
