After the notebook dv8000z arrived I change the hard drive and the memory before ever using the computer. But now the computer doesn't work It gives a message MEDIA TEST FAILURE. CHECK CABLE AND PXE EXISTING PXE ROM

Do I need to change it to the old hard drive again. Another question.. The two hard drives came close together – is this maybe the problem…??

    thanks dutchgirl

Did the original HDD have a small plastic jumper? Maybe the new one is set to slave instead of master.

It doesn't matter that the two HDDs came together, the magnetic thing is a myth. I'm assuming that you setup the CD-drive as primary boot device in Bios and have a bootable cd in it, as a brand new HDD would obviously not be bootable.

The Compact disc drive, it should be set to be the first place for the computer to look for information.
First, turn on the computer, insert your windows disc and see if it works. If it doesn't, turn off the computer and turn it on again with the CD still inside as you may haven't put it in fast enough the first time. If it still doesn't work, try this:
When you turn the notebook on, the HP logo will show and it will tell you to press a key to enter [BIOS] setup, probably F8, F12 or ESC. Press it several times until a setup screen appears. Then search for the part in which you can choose what will be the primary boot device. Choose the CD-ROM drive and save the changes. The computer will automatically reboot.

If that still doesn't work, post a little more info here.
