My Vostro 1500 recently died on me, trying to figure out with Dell what happened, but seems like it might be a memory problem. Fine. The problem is that I need to access some of the data on my HD, but obviously cannot switch the computer on. Is it at all possible for a non expert to connect the Vostro 1500 HD to another computer to access and backup this data?

You would need a HDD enclosure and fit the drive in it....which hdd do u have -- sata or ide..??
or you could just buy a USB to SATA/IDE cable..!!

its a sata drive. usb to sata cable sounds good as it's only going to be a temporary thing, I won't want to keep the HD connected to the desktop once the laptop is fixed.

iv done this before all you need to do is take off the dell connector on the end and i barrowed my sata cables from the cd drive and hooked it up but if you have an older desktop youll need to do somthing like angad mentioned
