    Hi folks,
Tried a google search on this and also search on this forum with no luck.
Got some sound advise here before, so going to try again...

    Background:
I am running a java based program (flowjo.com) that analyzes human cells stained with fluorescent dye and excited by 3 lasers via a single cell stream curvette and detected by a series of 9 photomultiplier tubes. Each sample is about 1gb in size.

I first tried to run the program on my old IBM x30 with mobile pentium III at 1.2ghz and 1gb ram. It was painful, taking 1min to boot up program and about 15-30 sec for each bivariate plot (and I have to do about a dozen plots for each sample). Also would crash regularly.

So I got a Dell 9400 with T2600 2.16ghz core duo and 2gb ram. Sweetness, esp with the amazing screen at 1920x1200! Takes about 10-15 sec to boot and about 5-10 sec for each plot.

1 major drawback is the size of the unit. I cannot use this on transoceanic flight as I would be regularly and it is a bohemoth.

Sooo, QUESTION: how will the core duo T2400 at 1.83 ghz compare? Lenovo packages the x60 with 1 and I am tempted. I tried to do a benchmark search on google for this and also at tomshardare.com, but they didnt do a comparison of the different duos.

Ive watched CPU usage with this program and I max out regularly on 1 core, 100% while the other remains silent (hence about 50% usage, and also this appears to be single thread program - ?). Also, end up using about 1gb ram.

Thanks in advance for your insights if any.

    Sanders

There might be a slight drop-off in power, but nothing dramatic. I suggest you max out the RAM (667) to make sure you're getting the most out of your system.
