Hi guys,
My acer aspire 5742g motherboard died and i want to replace it. I found one with the socket PGA989 rather than the rPGA988A that i originally had. So my question is if my CPU (core i5 450m) will be compatible on this socket. The chipset is HM55 like before i think. Thank you in advance.

It should work. The key is the chipset. You need to confirm that it is the HM55 chipset. I think the 989 sockets were first used on the 2nd gen Core-i processors (sandy bridge), but the socket should work with the first gen processors like your i5-450m. The chipset must match though, otherwise the socket is wired differently and will not work with the 1st gen CPUs.
From Wikipedia:
" Socket G1, also known as rPGA 988A (there are Socket G/rPGA 989 sockets that can take Socket G1/rPGA 988A or Socket G2/rPGA 988B packaged processors) "

thank you for your help. i will let you know how it goes.

well my replacement motherboard came today and the cpu works fine. But i have an other problem and i need help. my gt540m doesn't work. windows 7 recognize them as standard video adapter i installed the latest drivers and still doesn't work. Only the intel gpu works. This is what i see on device manager
and this on gpu-z
.
Thank you in advance for any help! -
any ideas for this problem?

Have you tried the drivers from Acer's site?
-
Yes I tried drivers from Acer site and the latest I found on net for both nvidia and Intel but no combination works. When I try to open the nvidia control panel it say that no monitor attached to an nvidia gpu or something like that. The fun part is that I can run a test tha GPU z has to check connection bandwidth with no problem on both GPUs.

When you swapped the motherboard, did you do a clean install of Windows?
Try installing the drivers manually by choosing "Update Driver" in Device Manager and pointing to the driver files for the video card. I
core i5 450m on PGA 989?
