I am of course talking about the ASUS UL30JT vs. the UL30VT. How big is the performance gain? I've been unable to find any benchmarks on the 640m or 620m.

I've looked at the benchmarks for the GPUs, G210m vs the G310m and the difference isn't huge (3047 vs 3223 in 3DMark06).

The CPU difference will be huge (i7 vs. SU7300)!! Are you sure you didn't mean the i3?

Have a look at the list in the link below , it does not have the i7-640m , but you can estimate the score from the i7-720m one.

The i7-640m will be around 3x the power of the SU7300

Ah, see I didn't know if the architecture would make such a difference. The i7 620um is clocked at 1.06 GHz with a 4MB L2 cache, whereas the SU7300 is a 1.3GHz processor with a 3MB L2 cache.

I've heard that the SU7300 with turbo is no slouch, scoring 3348 PCMarks while a Core 2 Duo P8400 at 2.26GHz only scores abour 250 marks higher at 3600 marks. (re: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2835/2)

I need this laptop soon, which is why I'm wondering if the i7-620um would really be worth that much of a wait.

Apologies, but are you talking about the i7-640m, or the i7-640 um? The 640m has a base clock speed of 2.66GHz whereas the 640um has a base speed of 1.2GHz.

I can understand how the i7-640m will blow an SU7300 out of the water. I'm wondering if the i7-640um would be significantly better.

Doubt you'd notice any difference from the 640UM - even from the 620M you won't notice a thing, unless you're doing specific CPU intensive tasks.

I didn't think I would either. The clock speeds are so similar and there's only an extra megabyte of L2 cache. I'm sure there is a performance gain, but I was skeptical that it would be night and day.

Now if Amazon.ca would just lower the price on the UL30VT, it's 150 dollars more in stupid Canada. Might have to go with an ASUS 1201N :S
