I've Acer travelmate, using notebook hardware control for temp monitoring and using Windows-7. Normal temp of CPU is like 55C and If I plugged in a usb pen drive or anything into the usb the temp goes up to 75C.
I do not understand this rise, and then If I use some video editing software, temp goes to 90C. The temperatures are true as at 90C I cant touch the back of laptop, it is so hot.
    Any suggestions..Thanks.

do you have anti-virus software that might be scanning the USB drive in the background?

Try using HWMonitor, NHC is old.

    follow this guide:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824

Also change the thermal paste and clean out the dust.

After you do all that, your CPU should idel at 30C and max out at 70C.

About the USB thing, run task manager and see what is using a high % of the CPU, then kill that task or program. A clean install would be great (backup first).

Unless you know exactly how well the OP's cooling system is well designed (or not) I would not count on those temperatures.

I don't see how any CPU can idle at 55C. It's just crazy, for any notebook (unless you dont have a fan).

    Thanks,
I've stopped the anti virus but no change, instead If I plug anything in the usb, wireless lan dongle, pocket pc, etc temp rise by 20 C. HWmonitor gives the same values of temp.
Earlier I opened the laptop to clean, but could not find any dust etc.
When I plugg the usb, processor use in task manager remains < 10 % but the temperature do rise.
CPU Idle at 55C is after I installed Windows-7, in XP it was less.
I'll try to follow the forum undervolting guide as mentioned above...but can you people check in your laptop how cpu temperature change when you plugg a usb device? Is the change applicable to each notebook...?
    Thanks,

No change at all in my notebook, I have never seen anything like it.

look around to see if there are bios updates as well as chipset and usb driver updates.

If you have a set of poorly written drivers, they could be passing all of teh usb management to the cpu instead of handling it in the chipset.

this is assuming that your chipset is capable of handling usb devices in hardware.

Also, try running a process/cpu monitoring program as you plug in a usb device and use it. I am NOT talking about a point in time 'snapshot' view like task manager. you need to run something over time (say 5-15 minutes) that will capture data and let you analyze it to see what you have running for processes before, during, and after you use a usb device.

When you plug in a USB device, some process is coming up that's heating up your CPU, because no other component will cause such a rapid change in temperatures, except a video card and I really don't think that's the issue. Open the Task Manager, then click the box for show processes for all users, prioritize the processes in order of the most CPU usage at the top, then plug in a USB drive and watch what shoots to the top of list. As for the idle temps, it's nothing I haven't heard before. Some notebooks just have shoddy cooling designs.. an example: Asus G51. But 90c is a little excessive. Try a good deep cleaning too.

a shoddy cooling design shouldnt be that shoddy. it moght be worth opening it up and checking the heatsink is attatched properly because on some notebooks it can come loose due to flexing of the whole notebook, this could easily cause temperatures like that. i doubt dust could be causing temperature that extreme, ive never cleaned out my notebook and it gets used in dusty workshops and it idles at 30 degrees.

    Thanks for the various comments,
When I insert a usb device, in task manager no major activity appears, cpu load remains ~ 10 % so I cant blame any program. Windows-7 resource monitor even shows all tit bit program and services, no noticeable change there.
To check heat sink is properly placed I need to open up again, but the point is why the heat issue arises when usb device is plugged in...?
Like newsposter mentioned it looks like something (may be usb drivers) are messing with cpu voltages,,but not sure..
I'll install windows xp and update the change,,,,
    thanks,

How odd. I have had some issues where the TaskMan in XP did not show all running tasks, but I really firmly believe that a clean install of XP, and a good internal cleaning will bring temps down considerably.

I managed to reduce Idle temp in windows-7 to 50C but with a usb device like wireless lan it went to 70, with use of internet watching youtube videos it is like 78C and with some other work it starts touching 85C, some video editing makes it to 90C.
I installed XP, Idle temp is 44C and with the same usb device cpu temp is 59C, it never went to 70C now with video editing. SO I prefer to use XP to be on safe side.
Little search on internet revealed that the voltage supply to the usb is changing the voltage level of CPU and heating it up....I updated to bios but even in xp the temp rises whenever usb device is plugged in, really odd phenomena, .....

try undervolting CPU and cleaning fans... it dropped my CPU temps by 15C++..... this might solve ur problem...
