Almost anything out there today will be better then a old Pentium 4.

Are you planning a new build or wanting to upgrade what you have?

A 1.5 core duo CPU is pretty much faster.
A 2.0 core 2 duo is enough for anything nowadays, except extreme enconding and gaming(extreme also)

Not sure about better, but PIII's seem to live a long time. Gave an old Dell away not too long ago which had a PIII and still ran fine. My sons lost the Windows CD years ago, so we installed Ubuntu and gave the machine to a woman I know, whose young daughter wanted a machine to surf the Net. It's got to be about eight years old, but just keeps on going . . . [IMG]

Hey I have a 80286 in my northgate laptop, that thing cranks. Bootup time is faster than any core 2 duo based system. Its 12Mhz loads dos 3.0 in about 1 second flat :D

To answer the question, A decent 1.5-1.6 core 2 duo is about 1.5 x the speed of your pentium 4 system.
I am assuming you have the pentium 4 630 @ 3.06Ghz. I have the same one at home, and it scores 7300Mflops. My 1.73Ghz core 2 duo T5300 scores 10800mflops, so basically a 1.6Ghz dual core will be more powerful than your 3.06ghz p4.

The thing is from 1986, it is not a sata or ata harddrive. It has some random port on the end of it. The drive is 25mm thick and has a compressable data size. The drive is labeled as 40mb, but their is some compression software within dos, which can make the harddrive 120mb. It is one strange laptop.

K-T I remember using an Apple in HS. We had real floppy's like 5 or 5 1/2 inch. We loaded the OS every time we turned on the computer from one of those. And I did not go to a poor HS that was the technology. One reason why I did not get the computer bug in HS. And no I am not retired or collecting social security you kids. It was not all that long ago. You kids are so lucky (spoiled).
