what cpus are better than my desktop which is pentium 4 3.1 ghz. are there any single core cpus which are just as fast or better. of course dual core is better, but i see alot of very cheap laptops with celeron M or something.

Almost anything out there today will be better then a old Pentium 4.
Are you planning a new build or wanting to upgrade what you have? -
stay far away from the Celeron M's my laptop came w/ one,,, and it's a very good hand warmer... but as soon as i got good info,, i upgraded as quick as i could get the box from the FED-EX driver

A 1.5 core duo CPU is pretty much faster.
A 2.0 core 2 duo is enough for anything nowadays, except extreme enconding and gaming(extreme also) -
get a Pentium Dual Core. You'll get C2D for almost as much as for celeron

i was just having a look and it looks like dual cores are the same amount price wise as some celeron M,only thing the celeron comes with xp. mostly core duo or core 2 nowdays.
okay thanks,i got the answer to my question -
how come nobody mentions P-M? it was big step from P-4M

Hey I have a 80286 in my northgate laptop, that thing cranks. Bootup time is faster than any core 2 duo based system. Its 12Mhz loads dos 3.0 in about 1 second flat
To answer the question, A decent 1.5-1.6 core 2 duo is about 1.5 x the speed of your pentium 4 system.
I am assuming you have the pentium 4 630 @ 3.06Ghz. I have the same one at home, and it scores 7300Mflops. My 1.73Ghz core 2 duo T5300 scores 10800mflops, so basically a 1.6Ghz dual core will be more powerful than your 3.06ghz p4.

The thing is from 1986, it is not a sata or ata harddrive. It has some random port on the end of it. The drive is 25mm thick and has a compressable data size. The drive is labeled as 40mb, but their is some compression software within dos, which can make the harddrive 120mb. It is one strange laptop.

RLL or MFM drives often refered to as winchester drives... i forgot a long time ago how they got that name,,, but its covered in my A+ guide from 95
i just thought dos 3.3 would opperate a bit smoother -
K-T I remember using an Apple in HS. We had real floppy's like 5 or 5 1/2 inch. We loaded the OS every time we turned on the computer from one of those. And I did not go to a poor HS that was the technology. One reason why I did not get the computer bug in HS. And no I am not retired or collecting social security you kids. It was not all that long ago. You kids are so lucky (spoiled).
