Will it make any diff performance-wise if I get 1x1024 vs. 2x512 dimms? (I'm thinking if maybe it can access both dimms on separate channels or something)
Just ordered Dell I6000D w/ the Intel Pentium M Sonoma. It has the 533MHz FSB, but Dell ships it w/DDR2-400.
I got 2x256 DDR2-400 as a free "upgrade" on my order and am planning on buying 1GB DDR2-533 (and selling the 2x256 DDR2-400 - any takers?)
I don't see myself ever going beyond 1GB w/this machine, so it doesn't matter in terms of future expandability.
According to

the 2x512 would be about $9 more total, so that really is a non-factor also.
twice two makes five is sometimes a very charming thing too

you need to find out if your motherboard is dual channel. If it is use two sticks of the same brand and type. You might want to check with Dell, Dells are kinda picky about the type of ram they will run on.
X6000 / P-4 3.2GHz (540) / 2gigs PC2 4200 (533MHz) DDR2 Ram / 7200RPM 60 gig HHD / 8x DVD Burner and the Brightview! -
go for 2 sticks at least you will get dual channel. It's not much of an improvement, but there is no reason not to have it since the cost is practically the same.

yeah 2x 1024MB DDR2 = 2GB + Dual ch,
2 is the magic number
