I have 4 dimm slots. each pair can run dual channel. originally it was shipped with 1gig (2x512) ram dual channel ddr400 config. I've installed 1 more gig of ram (an extra 2x512) but am unable to run ddr400 dual channel. I have to bring it down to ddr333. My question is what is better? 1 gig running in dual channel ddr400 or 2 gigs running dual channel ddr333?

Edit: I should probably clarify, I'm looking for the best possible gaming performance

    Did you add 2x512MB DDR-333 or DDR-400 ?

Anyway, 1GB DDR400 in dual channel will be faster, if you're into PCMark Scores. (Also depends upon the CPU's FSB)

In gaming, DDR-333 or DDR-400 DC is not gonna make a difference, especially if the GPU has its own dedicated memory.

Usually, more RAM is better....'cause if you're outta memory, the system will use the HDD for cache, which is like 1000x slower than RAM.

more ram is better assuming you actually will use more than 1GB of memory.

What motherboard? I'm assuming it's not the laptop in your sig that you are talking about. I remember some boards not offering full ddr speed when all slots are populated. Sometimes, it is the memory controller on the CPU (in the Athlon64's case) where it wouldn't allow you to run more than 2 DIMM's at full DDR400 speed.

Yes it's my desktop. I'm using the AV8 MB and yes it is the amd64 3500. all 4 sticks are ddr400. So if all 4 slots are occupied then ddr333 dual channel is the best I can get? What if I move it to single channel ddr400?
