I have a new Dell Inspiron 1564 purchased 3 days back.
Since yesterday this starts happening, when I press the power button the power led turn on but screen remains blank and it takes 5-6 seconds till Dell logo appears, why this happening?
Problem remains the same either on battery or with mains power
In BIOS i selected default setting but no change.

    Yeah thats pretty much normal...

I guess you could try taking out the battery, Taking out the CMOS Battery to fully reset BIOS if you want to be sure. But I doubt theres something wrong. :)

during these 6 seconds the laptop is likely to be checking the integrety of its hardware (CPU, RAM...)

Well, many people with similar issue....
I noticed this because my old Acer travelmate 2410 laptop takes 3-4 sec till the acer logo appears, and the difference b/w the two makes me think there is some problem...but it looks it is normal...
